West England families
Descendants of William Wynniatt/Winnett of Snowshill (born c. 1745)
William Winnett married Sarah White in Richmond, Surrey in 1772. They had several children there, but the evidence is that they then went to Snowshill, Gloucestershire where they had a further son, Richard (this time spelt Wynniatt) in 1788. In fact, William also probably came from Snowshill, where a family of Wynniatts had been living since the 1690s (see Wynniatts of Gloucestershire in Historical families).
Thomas Winnett (probably born 1782 to William and Sarah) married Lucy Hunt in Sedgeberrow, Worcestershire about 4 miles from Snowshill in 1811. They had seven children, most of whom had large families and descendants with the Winnett name live to this day.
Richard Winnett married Ann Hemming in 1814 at Wickhamford, Worcestershire. They had at least 10 children, the last born in 1838. Hi wife is given the name Winniat in the 1851 census, but all of his descendants were consistently called Winnett.
The evolution of the name from a Wynniatt form to Winnett is clearly seen here, and no doubt happened previously as well.
Descendants of John Winnett of Inkberrow (born c. 1770)
John Wynniott and Ann Osbund (or Housband) married at Gloucester in 1797. They had a son James Winnett in Pershore, Worcestershire in 1800. Other children christened at nearby Inkberrow had their names spelt Winiat or Winniat. James and Fanny had 6 children including Thomas (b. 1840) who gave rise to Turvey's "Family No. 3". The earlier ancestors of this family probably came from the Droitwich area where the name was prominent from the 1600s.
Descendants of Thomas Winnett of Salford, Oxfordshire (born c. 1785)
Thomas Winnett married Jane Williams in Salford in 1809 and had 5 children of whom two sons, John and Henry had descendants. Thomas was from Bloxham, Oxfordshire where in 1755 a John Winnett first appears in a marriage. The name varies a great deal in these registers being spelt Wynniatt, Winniate, Wynniat and Winnet, again suggesting a connection with the Wynniatts of Gloucestershire.
